Definities: EAEC = enteroaggregatieve E. coli; EHEC = enterohemorragische E. coli; EIEC = entero-invasieve E. coli; EPEC = enteropathogene E. coli; STEC = Shiga-toxine producerende E. coli; ETEC = enterotoxische E. coli.
Voor STEC en EHEC (E. coli groep binnen de STEC die ernstige ziekte kan veroorzaken) geldt dat dit een meldingsplichtige ziekte groep B2 is.
